Today is my improv class and I am mucho excited about the incredible variety of people taking my class. Those are my favorite kind of classes. When you get in a room with people from completely different places and from completely different backgrounds, you get improv gold. Your pool of ideas and subconscious associations explodes into a strata of improv that can only be described as completely unexpected. Of course, getting that many different people on the same page is the challenge, but I’ve no doubt everyone operates on one basic truth; everyone likes to have fun.

So we’re going to have fun. I’ve got some of my favorite games from Random Acts, IO! and UCB picked out. It’s pretty basic, three hours isn’t enough time to cover too much for improv, but minds will be blown.

In other news SKETCHFEST IS LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY. This Sketchfest, as well as the following improv shows will be the last seasonal performance of the 2010 Flaws. Our old friend Brian Work will be coming down to join us and between the five of us this is going to be the performance of a lifetime (given that lifetime occurs between Aug 12th-13th). Again, the times and prices for Sketchfest are: August 12th and 13th (that’s a Thursday and Friday) 8pm Sketchfest show, which consists of the best sketches of the 09 and 10 season, and 10pm improv show. $10 at the door per show or only $15 if you go to both. Come gaze in wonder at the work of my teams twisty minds. Oh, and laugh too.

The day following the Sketchfest our dear Krista and Justin will be hopping on planes back to New York, Brian will be heading back home to Atlanta, Kevin will be exploring his dream of becoming a Land Cucumber (the Sea Cucumbers less popular cousin) and yours truly will be heading to Madison Wisconsin to sample the cheese, spend some quality time with his favorite isthmus, and watch his only sister get married.

We here at the Flaws make a commitment to only bring the very best in sketch comedy we wrote 72 hours before the show, and up until this time, we’ve done just that. But what you didn’t know was that all of those shows where you saw sketches of homeless unicorns, dinosaur office workers, and men in diapers were simply the audition to get into our Grade A Pinnacle of Comedy Showcase, the SKETCHFEST.

Now, this August 12th and 13th at 8pm comes the afore mentioned Sketchfest. We’ve got a budget, we’ve got rehearsal time, we’ve got the chance to make all of your dreams come true (if your dreams were to laugh at the things we do).

To those of you who came to this past weeks shows, it was great to see you out, and I apologize for the noxious smell of ketchup (or as the British spell it, Caspust) that came as a result of having fake guts pulled out of me. For those of you who were not there, I make no apologies.

at long last, a date! I will be teaching a one day improv intensive open to anyone sixteen or older to be held August 7th from noon to 5pm at the Studio in Seaside. The class will include five hours of instruction, demonstration, and very active participation, as well as free ticket vouchers for the Flaws sketchfest the following week and a super awesome Flaws T-shirt. And as with all  improv classes worth their salt, expect some super sexy reading material to go with it. The total cost will be $60, cash and check accepted. I’m not going to write that we’ve got a great show planned tonight. I’m only going to tell you that blindfolds and 100 moustraps are involved. Okay, more like 40, but more than five looks like a hundred to an audience.

I’m teaching an improv workshop on either August 7th or 8th, location, pricing, and course offering will be available in the next day or so. So if you wanted to take an improv class but wanted no pertinent information, this post is for you!

In other news, Flaws Friend Brian Work has just posted a movie we filmed last year titled “There Will Be Movie Rentals”. It came just after “There will be coffee” and both of them came about when I went through a serious Daniel Plainview, There will be Blood phase. No coincidence when you consider who my personal hero’s are.

We here at the Flaws have worked our butts to give you the best in comedy. Though I don’t know how much you can trust a man who thinks this is the funniest thing he’s ever seen. Fourth of July weekend we threw up four new full length sketches as well as an extra show. That’s a lot of pressure, people. We had to be at a place by a time and say things in front of people we didn’t even know.

So now we’re taking some me/us time. I mean, Jesus people, what more can we give you?  We made you laugh, we made you pancakes, we made you t-shirts, I even wore a diaper for you. Now we’re going to slow things down this coming show, and do something for us, but also for you. Forget that sketch comedy nonsense, and toss out those boring old Harolds that you have to explain what they are every time you perform them and even then it’s still confusing, and welcome some good old fashion, down on the farm, improv games! Worlds Worst! Actors Worst Nightmare! Interrogator! Party Quirks! It’s like a Whose Line Is It Anyway that was never intended to air on ABC Family. So we hope to see you this Thursday and Friday night and trust that we’re skimming our sketch juices, putting them in an old mason jar, and come this time next week we’ll have a fine sketch moonshine to pour down your comedy gullets. At this point I can’t tell if my metaphors are getting better or worse.

A special thanks goes out to Flaws Alumni Brian Work! As Krista was out of town, he kindly swooped in to be the pretty lady of our group this week. Brian and I even got to film a little number we wrote a year ago, in which we answer the question, What’s behind the hat?

We also have some hot new Merch at the shows, a really pleasant cotton t-shirt. It’s super soft and super flaws and it looks a little like this.

And finally, many people have been clamoring for a Saturday show, so yes, you the people, shall have a Saturday show. This JULY 3rd in honor of the day before the signing of the declaration of independence, we are going to have an all improv show, with all of the shows that week being Americana themed. Also, that morning the flaws will be making delicious pancakes at the Seaside Farmers Market to promote our show that evening. So wake up, come to seaside, eat our pancakes, enjoy our sights, come see Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged at the Seaside Rep Theatre and then come feast your eyes upon a Flaws show.

The Flaws are reunited once again! Kevin hast returned from whenst he came! Today was a grand rehearsal during which we all met Rigby, Kevin’s pup, who volunteered in a few scenes of our hyper active hyper Larond. Too bad we are only reunited for about 2 days because sadly Krista departs for Long Island on Wednesday morning to watch her kin graduate and oher New Yorky things. We will miss her, but only to even out the estrogen/testosterone levels. But like we said, Kevin is back so that should be taken care of. (OHHHHHHHHHH!)

Oldie Flaw Brian Work is here this week-ish with some big ideas and some bald heads. We got right to filming a little side project he had his heart set on; the filming process already shows promise. The sketches and shows in their entirety will feature Mr. Work this weekend, something we are all completely looking forward to. The prop list so far includes baby food,  a fiddle and multiple paisley neckerchiefs so I mean… I’d be there.

Digital Graffiti in Alys Beach was last night and it was the most impressive thing I’ve seen since Jen Signor licked a sandwich clean of only its jelly back in 3rd grade. Anything this awesome obviously had something to do with Kevin Boyle, one of our very own funny boys. This was one of those times where I was confronted with a real life movie scene; the super super extravagant blow out party at the end of the school year at the home of that one rich girl in the class. I has the nerd who got invited by a cool quarterback on what originated as a dare but now was a genuine date, and yes, by all these accounts I should have looked like Rachel Leigh Cook as Laney Boggs. In reality I looked like Krista trying to keep her cool at the Museum of Modern Art’s cooler hippie brother of events. Great job Kevin and to everyone involved; The DJ floating mid-pool and the hypno-art loops were once in a lifetime sights for which I thank you. Awesome.

I am amidst giving painfully slow birth to some adorably cuddly new sketches for this week, in which you’ll only sadly see 3 of the 4 Flaws. Kevin is appropriately Best Man at a former Flaw’s wedding, so on top of new material and less players, the 3 of us will have to master not being able to get on roller coasters, wearing a Yankee’s hat well and being ironic. Big work load but we got it.

The Flaws are feeling the crunch, most definitely. 1 guy gone, 2 guys in shows all week and me… updating this blog? Sure, we’ll take it. We are chugging along and enjoying the bittersweet symphony that is working incessantly for what we ultimately love to do. The bummer? Working incessantly for what that which doesn’t fit into that category. Boo hoo, poor comedians! I’ll stop now.
